Markarth Side is located in the western county of Skyrim and is home to the Imperial College of the Voice. The city was constructed by the Dwemer, a fabled lost race of Mer whose cities (also known as colonies) often contain ancient steam-powered creations.

The architectural style of Markarth is designed out of stone, which is most likely due to the abundance of mountainous regions found throughout Skyrim. This is unlike the Dwemer cities found in Morrowind which are constructed from metal.
